Medicaid: Selected Resources for National, State, and Local Enrollment Data

Published March 25, 2026 · Angela Napili, Sarah K. Braun

Summary

This report serves as a guide to selected federal and nonfederal sources for statistics on Medicaid enrollment and enrollee characteristics. It is intended to assist decisionmakers considering Medicaid policy options by providing links to datasets, dashboards and related tools. Table A-1 in the Appendix, summarizes the data sources and the types of information they contain, which may help those with questions about Medicaid enrollment in specific populations or geographic areas to determine which data source to use. Data from different sources may not be directly comparable due to differences in methodology, reporting periods, population definitions, or data types (e.g., survey versus administrative data). The report is not exhaustive and CRS does not independently validate the accuracy of the external data sources.
