Summary

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is an independent agency in the executive branch headed by the commissioner of Social Security. It is responsible for administering Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, which are the nation’s primary income support programs for older adults and individuals with disabilities. SSA is also responsible for supporting the administration of Medicare and certain other non-SSA programs and activities. This report provides selected data on SSA’s recent and historical staffing levels, including state disability determination services staffing levels. It includes data on staff on duty, work years, and full-time equivalent employment. It also includes data by agency office or component.
