FY2026 Department of Defense Appropriations: In Brief

Published April 2, 2026 · Cameron M. Keys

Summary

Congress provided FY2026 appropriations totaling $839.2 billion for certain national defense activities of the Department of Defense (DOD) through the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2026 (Division A of P.L. 119-75). (DOD is “using a secondary Department of War designation,” under Executive Order 14347 dated September 5, 2025.) Funding provided in the act was $8.4 billion more than DOD’s FY2026 request for such activities. This report summarizes the legislative process and funding provisions related to these appropriations and provides an overview of the budgetary resources that were available to the department during two lapses in appropriations and one continuing resolution (CR) prior to enactment of full-year appropriations. The report also covers the FY2026 allocation of FY2025 DOD funding provided by the FY2025 reconciliation law (Title II of P.L. 119-21).
